The short answer for anyone looking for an Alaçatı surf school: windsurf, kitesurf and wing foil schools on Alaçatı bay teach beginners, children and advanced riders, and rent out equipment. Below are nine Alaçatı windsurf and kitesurf schools whose own websites are live today, in alphabetical order. The İzmir Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism describes the bay, with its very shallow water and steady wind, as an ideal training ground for beginners.

The season: according to the İzmir Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism, the windy season runs from May to October; from mid-June to mid-September the wind blows from the north, and from October to April usually from the south. Some schools say they are open all year (ASPC, Sun Surf Alaçatı), Micro Kitesurf says its lessons continue in autumn and winter, and Kite And More gives May to September as the most reliable months for kitesurfing. Dates can change from year to year.

What to ask before you book: the instructors' certification (the schools' own sites in Alaçatı mention VDWS, IKO and the Turkish Sailing Federation, TYF); insurance for the lesson and the equipment, and whether your own travel insurance covers water sports; whether the lesson is private or in a group, how many hours it lasts, whether equipment and wetsuit are included; a rescue boat; and the minimum age for children.
